Lower Yosemite Falls in Blue and Orange

Lower Yosemite Falls in Blue and Orange

Lower Yosemite Falls in Blue and Orange, 24" x 24", gallery wrap, painted on edges, Limited Edition Prints Available. This painting was predicated on a much smaller 6" x 6" canvas I had done a couple years prior, in which I used a lot of blue, orange, and purple/ magenta, and I blended the colors in such a way that I felt they were more subdued. I tried to recreate that feeling on a larger scale, with a similar image, and a more recent photo. This is my version of a semi-subdued landscape. I find it hard to keep the…

Joy - Lower Yosemite Falls

Joy – Lower Yosemite Falls

Joy – Lower Yosemite Falls, 24" x 24", acrylic on gallery wrap canvas, SOLD – Limited Edition Prints Available. Brightly colored  rocks and the contrast between light and shadow are the focus of this painting of Lower Yosemite Falls. Only the bottom part of the waterfall is visible, starkly accented against the deep blue-violet cliff wall. The rocks are above the water, which is barely seen as it threads its’ way down towards the bridge and descends into the river. The stones are simple, round, brilliant and shining; I attempted to depict  the shapes and configurations as accurately as I…

Blue Manzanita

Blue Manzanita

Blue Manzanita, 8" x 8", acrylic on gallery wrap canvas – SOLD. This small painting was conceived on the same day that I started "Early Morning, Dark Water". I was taking photos down at Patty’s Pond in El Portal, and this fat manzanita bush seemed to glow subtly blue in the grey twilight. In the distance, facing towards Yosemite, the sun was illuminating the hillside, just visible through the trees. Ideally, I would have liked to come back and paint the image on site; as it happened, I used one of my photos as a reference, remembering how I felt…

Royal Arches

Royal Arches

Royal Arches – 20" x 20", acrylic on gallery wrap canvas, Limited Edition Prints available. In back of the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite, past the valet parking and on the edge of the bungalows, is an open space with a wide close up view of the ‘Royal Arches’; an area of concentric half circles marked by dark striations and deep grooves in the mountain side. The enveloping height and nearness of the rock face creates a looming effect. I began this painting on site in late March. It was colder than I had anticipated, and I had to work fast…

Proximity

Proximity

Proximity, 30" x 40", acrylic on gallery wrap canvas, limited edition prints available. This is an autumn scene of a large tree located to the left of Yosemite Falls. It’s leaves were a round golden mass in the late morning light. I was interested by the composition of the cave-like shadow behind the tree, and the steep mountain face which constitutes the background. The surrounding pines and bushes create a visual wall of almost solid dark green, making an asymmetrical band which delineates the upper mountain and lower pastel colored field. I used a lot of cobalt teal and phthalo…

Dark Water, Early Morning

Dark Water, Early Morning

Dark Water, Early Morning, 16" x 20", acrylic on gallery wrap canvas. Limited edition prints available. One morning in December, I went out to Patty’s Pond, a deep smooth ovoid stretch of the Merced River across the road from El Portal, a small town just outside of Yosemite National Park. Although in the summer it is a local swimming hole, at mid-winter the water was low and many river rocks were visible. I set up my easel on the bank, wedging a leg of the tripod into a stony crevice, and dug the other two into cold ground covered with…
