Halo – 20" x 20", Acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas – SOLD, Limited Edition Prints
This painting is based on sketches that I made in my notebooks, over and
over so I wouldn’t forget; and took about 3 years to complete from the first
time I drew it as a potential idea. I had in mind pictures of the Virgin
Mary; and also, older paintings in which halos were depicted as large ornate
flat disks framing the whole head. I purposely chose to use only fish and
birds in an Escher-esque fashion in the area which would normally be
hair – and I referred to the ‘halo’ aspect of the design by the roundness
of the shape, and by using a striking gold metallic background, as well as
gold outlining. The prints in the lower red portion are stars, triple moon
goddess symbols, and spirals. I tried something new here and made my own
stamps out of cardboard.
My intent was to create the impression of contained continuous
motion, centered around a serene countenance.
