Snoopy on the Spotted Rug
Snoopy on the Spotted Rug, 16" x 20", acrylic on Ampersand Gessobord with 2 inch wooden cradle – Limited Edition Prints Available.
Because of the smooth surface of the coated board, the texture of this painting is flat and subtle and smooth as well. Usually I would use canvas for this sort of painting, reserving the board for detailed figures with glazing. I tried something new here, and I plan on using the Ampersand board more extensively.
This is a painting of one of my many cats, based on one of my many photos of same. The style shares some elements common to Japanese prints, specifically, the mostly solid areas of black, and the simple patterned background. ( When I think of Japanese prints, it is because of art history class, and how they influenced modern artists.) My goal was to imply tension and movement in the cat, while creating a colorful background pattern. The simple division of the picture plane by the upper dark band (exposed floor) completed the design. I used the photo as a starting point and adjusted colors and shapes as necessary.
