Heart of the Forest

Acrylic on Gallery Wrap Canvas, 18″ x 24″
In search of inspiration, I dove into the work of Max Ernst. His technique of outlining the edges of forms with light and his incredible ability to create fantastic, complex images absolutely fascinates me. A reference to a piece called The Heart of the Forest, sparked my curiosity but with no accompanying illustration, I couldn’t help but be struck by the poetic nature of the phrase. I decided to imagine and create my own interpretation. (I still have not seen the Ernst picture, and have no idea what it looks like.) My concept was based on the color scheme of blue, green and red, with the intent of accentuating a bright crimson heart floating above the forest floor. A focus on simplicity, beauty, contrast, and color was the guiding principle. I limned the trees and bushes with a turquoise glow. An incandescent blue bird in the heart’s interior implies a sentient animal presence in an otherwise dark, secluded, and secret enclave. I remain enamored with the simplicity and beauty of this painting.
